I always liked that since Digimon is a much less important/profitable series than Pokemon, they are willing to do more out-there things with it. My favorite Digimon series was the 3rd season Tamers which had the Digimon aesthetic painted in dark colors. Most action is at night, the art direction is more shadows, and the topics heavier while still being essentially a monster catching/raising sim. Digimon Survive is aesthetically closer to that feeling than any other game from the franchise. The game in story, execution, and gameplay is nearly identical to 3DS game SMT Devil Survivor which is about teens being trapped while the world crumble around them (Devil survivor is in Tokyo, Digimon survive in an abandoned school in the woods) along with VN choices that end with characters living or dying and very different endings. It’s a JRPG and a SMT-lite so of course you end up fighting god with the power of friendship at the end and I don’t think it is groundbreaking in a vacuum, but it’s a somewhat rare game type and complete departure for the series that they will probably never do again cause it didn’t sell particularly well as I remember. Also I played it mostly in Sweden while I was there for work and I think it will be a good memory for me for a while!
